(Mustang, Oklahoma – May 3, 2021) – The Oklahoma Directors of Special Services (ODSS) recently announced that Dr. Karen Wilson, Mustang Public School’s Executive Director of Student Services, has been named the ODSS Director of the Year for the State of Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Director of Special Services makes this award annually to recognize an outstanding administrator of special education making exemplary contributions to promote and further the education of children with disabilities.
Karen has spent thirty-four years in public education, as a general education teacher, Title I reading and math teacher, special education teacher, IEP facilitator, Assistant Director of Special Education, Director of Special Education and now the Executive Director of Student Services. She is married to her husband of thirty-six years, Steven, who works at Mustang High School. Together, they have two daughters, Christina and Angela, who are both professionals in the field of education and Occupational Therapy. “I love the children that I am allowed to serve, the district that I have worked with for thirty-three years, and the people I work with because they all share my heart,” Karen said. “I am very humbled to even be considered and for the letters of recommendations that were written on my behalf! Every service provider in our district who serves our students should be celebrated for learning to serve students through virtual and the classroom this year and helping students stay focused on learning during this incredibly difficult year!”
“I have known Karen for over 20 years in one capacity or another,” Superintendent Charles Bradley said. “She is an exemplary candidate for this honor as she daily exhibits outstanding and innovative leadership toward furthering the education of children with disabilities, not only in Mustang Public Schools, but throughout the State of Oklahoma. In her role as Executive Director, she oversees multiple departments from Special Education to Nursing all while building life-changing relationships with her colleagues and team. In sum, Dr. Karen Wilson has shown to be one of the most versatile educational professionals that I have ever known. She is knowledgeable, collaborative, and she communicates with ease. Karen is not just the excellent leader and teammate for whom every stakeholder hopes, but she is also a wonderfully kind and compassionate person with a heart for helping others and an honest desire to make this world of education a better place. Dr. Karen Wilson is an asset to Mustang Public Schools!”
The Directors of Special Services (ODSS) provide local special education directors an opportunity to collaborate, problem-solve and participate in professional development.
