What is Linewize, and how does it protect my child?
Linewize is an online safety platform that filters and monitors internet activity on school-owned devices to ensure students are protected from inappropriate content and harmful online behaviors. It helps promote responsible digital citizenship by blocking access to certain categories of websites and monitoring for risky behaviors.
How does it work?
How does it work?
Linewize uses advanced filtering technology to block inappropriate content based on categories such as pornography, malware, offensive language, and more. This filtering is applied on all school-owned devices to keep students safe while they are learning online. Linewize works by enforcing school-administered Internet access rules. For example, one rule might prohibit students from accessing social media websites. In this case, a student attempting to log into Facebook would be blocked, and the failed attempt would be logged.
Filtering during after-school hours:
The Linewize web-based services operate in tandem with MPS's managed Google Workspace for Education accounts (i.e., when a student is logged into a Chromebook with their school email address). If your student uses their personal Chromebook to log in to their school-based Google account, that device will be subject to the school's content filtering rules. Families who do not wish their students to be subject to such restrictions on their personal Chromebooks should ensure students log out of their school account before browsing.
Note: MPS Chromebooks are intended for student use only.
More Information/Specifics:
Linewize Monitor uses a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and specially trained human moderators to flag when a student’s online behavior may be dangerous.
Suspected low level concerns are flagged for school officials to evaluate. Suspected higher level concerns, including a risk to student health or life, are reviewed by a human moderator who will contact the school directly, if deemed genuine. This happens within minutes of the risk occurring.
Low risks are stored in a portal for school officials to review and discount as a false alarm as appropriate. More serious risks, including to student health or life are sent to a human moderator for analysis and escalation to our school district’s safeguarding contact, who may be in contact in case of emergency.
Does Linewize monitor everything my child does online?
Linewize monitors internet activity on school-owned devices, including websites visited, searches made, and content consumed. It also flags concerning online behaviors like cyberbullying or searches for harmful content. Monitoring helps keep students safe, but it is limited to school-issued devices.
What does Linewize monitor for?
Categories of alerts include:
- Vulnerable Person (credible threats of suicide, severely distressed)
- Bullying/Violence (intimidation, threatening others)
- Sexual Content (explicit images, video, or text)
- Offensive User (profanity, objectionable subjects or images)
- Oversharer (exposes data about themselves)
- Grooming (inappropriate interactions with 18 years or older adults)
- Terrorism/Extremism (promotes violence, intimidation or terrorist activities)
What Linewize Monitor doesn’t do:
- View, share, or collect personal student data
- Have access to parental contact information
- Access video cameras on student devices
- Monitor personal devices unless they are logged into their CUSD Student account
- Contact parent(s)/guardian(s) directly
What does Linewize block (for MPS)?
What happens if my child tries to access a blocked site?
Can I see a report of my child’s online activity through Linewize?
Can my child bypass Linewize’s filtering?
Linewize is designed to be highly secure and difficult to bypass. However, no system is completely foolproof. If a student attempts to use a VPN or proxy to bypass the filter, Linewize is equipped to detect and block such attempts, and the activity may be flagged for review by school administrators.
Can I, as a parent/guardian, adjust the filters for my child’s school device?
The filtering rules for school-owned devices are managed by Mustang Public Schools to ensure consistency and compliance with federal regulations like the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). However, parents can use Qustodio to set additional filtering rules for their child's personal devices outside of school hours.
Will Linewize monitor my child’s personal devices?
What about privacy?
Protection and Privacy:
Privacy is a priority for our district. Linewize has been awarded with iKeepSafe certifications for complying with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and federal student privacy laws. Linewize does not own, keep, or share any student information collected by the filter. After one school year, data is permanently deleted.
