#StudentSpotlight - MHS Senior Alex Vo received a $4,000 scholarship to attend an extremely competitive music summer program called Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) this summer. Alex performed with their Young Artists Wind Ensemble. The program has an acceptance rate of less than 30% and applicants come across the world; most alumni win auditions at top music universities and conservatories such as Juilliard, Rice, University of Southern California, and more! During the four week Institute, Alex studied under Boston University faculty and Boston Symphony Orchestra professional members, attended wind ensemble rehearsals with prestigious conductors, performed concerts and recitals with chamber groups, and much more.

“During the grueling and long audition process for the program, I stressed, stayed long nights at the school recording audition tapes, and spending hours on writing my application essays—I nearly gave up and decided to withdraw my application. However, I am so glad I didn’t. Attending BUTI was truly life-changing. I met lifelong friends, learned amazing musical information under some of the world’s best professors, watched and listened to a major US professional orchestra multiple times a week for free, and delved into my love for music even more. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it.” -Alex Vo
