Mustang Kindergartner Illustrates Her Own Published Children's Book

Young girl smiling and holding a children’s book titled “Charlie’s Backyard Adventures!” that she illustrated.

Sometimes the best stories take years to come to life.

About 15 years ago, the Rogers family had a tiny Shorkie puppy who was always doing something funny. The family often joked that they should write a children’s book about him someday. Like many good ideas, life got busy, and the book never quite happened.

Fast forward to today.

Now, with a house full of energetic pets and a kindergartner who loves to draw, that old idea found new life. Mustang Valley Elementary student Charlie Rogers teamed up with her dad, Justin, to finally bring the family’s book idea to life.

The result is Charlie’s Backyard Adventures!, a children’s book written by Justin Rogers and illustrated entirely by Charlie.

Charlie jumped at the opportunity to illustrate the story. Page by page, she filled the book with drawings inspired by the animals and adventures that surround her at home.

Her favorite part of the project?

“Drawing my furry siblings,” Charlie said.

The story celebrates the magic of imagination, showing how ordinary places can become extraordinary adventures through a child’s eyes. A backyard becomes an ocean. A garden turns into a jungle. Everyday moments become big discoveries.

After nearly a year of working on the project together, the book was recently published. Charlie even brought a copy to school so her teacher could read it to the class.

What started as a family joke years ago has now become a published story and a special father-daughter project that Charlie will always remember.

And if you ask Charlie, she’s already thinking about the next adventure.
