Subject: Attendance Boundary Realignment for Intermediate and Middle Schools

Mustang Families,

As our community continues to grow, Mustang Public Schools remains committed to providing a high-quality educational experience for all students. To meet the needs of our expanding district and prepare for additional growth, it has become necessary to realign the attendance boundaries for our intermediate and middle schools.

These boundary adjustments are part of our district’s comprehensive efforts to provide balanced, effective learning environments for all students.  The new boundaries have been carefully designed to address several important goals:

  • Alleviate Overpopulation: Adjust boundaries to reduce overpopulation at some sites, ensuring equitable distribution of students;
  • Plan for Growth: Create boundaries that account for anticipated growth across our district;
  • Enhance Consistency: Establish a more seamless progression for students as they transition from elementary to intermediate to middle school.

As we worked through this process, we adhered to the following guiding principles to minimize disruption whenever possible:

  • Housing additions were kept intact to preserve neighborhood connections.
  • Transportation plans prioritize student safety, with a goal of maintaining bus rides under 40 minutes (rural routes are closely monitored).
  • Buses will not be routed past one school to reach another.
  • The "right-turn-only" rule is maintained for bus routes on high-traffic, four-lane roads.

These changes align with the thoughtful and meticulous process used for the recent elementary boundary realignment. Please know that these decisions are not made lightly; every aspect has been carefully considered, incorporating extensive planning and analysis of demographic studies, student population data, transportation logistics, and anticipated growth patterns.

We understand that this process can raise concerns and questions, especially when families have built strong connections to their current schools. We are committed to ensuring that this transition minimizes disruption while maximizing opportunities for student success. To help families navigate this process, we encourage you to visit our website at https://www.mustangps.org/families-students/enrollment, where you can learn more, view updated boundary maps, or ask questions/provide feedback.

This boundary realignment ensures that all our intermediate and middle schools can continue providing the experience and support that Mustang families expect. While change can be difficult, we are confident that transitioning families will quickly feel at home and build strong connections in their new schools.  Thank you for your continued support of Mustang Public Schools. Together, we are building a bright future for our students and our community.

Mustang Public Schools Responds to PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident

(Mustang, Oklahoma – January 13, 2025) – Mustang Public Schools (MPS) has been informed of a cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, the district’s student information system provider. According to PowerSchool, an unauthorized party accessed their PowerSource portal, which allowed access to specific data from school districts across the country, including Mustang Public Schools.

What Happened: On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool identified unauthorized access to its PowerSource portal using a compromised credential. The breach affected data from student and staff tables, including, for Mustang, records dating back to 2009. Importantly, PowerSchool has confirmed that this breach did not impact any other systems or services used by the district.

What Data Was Affected: The affected data accessed includes:

  • For Staff: Limited personal information such as names, addresses, work contact information, and, in 15 cases, Social Security numbers.
  • For Students: Information, including names/addresses (including parent/guardian), DOB, grade levels, phone numbers, ethnicity, student alerts (if present), state student ID numbers, and emergency contacts.

Passwords were not included in the compromised data, and current District systems remain secure.

Our Response: Mustang Public Schools is working closely with PowerSchool, third-party cybersecurity experts, and law enforcement to address this issue. PowerSchool has taken steps to contain the breach, including deactivating the compromised credentials, enhancing security protocols, and monitoring for potential misuse of data.

Additionally, Mustang Public Schools is committed to:

  • Supporting affected individuals by connecting them with PowerSchool which has promised to provide resources such as credit monitoring and identity protection services where applicable.
  • Keeping our families and staff informed with transparent and timely updates as more information becomes available.

What You Can Do: While PowerSchool has indicated that the data is not expected to be shared or made public, Mustang Public Schools encourages families and staff to remain vigilant by monitoring for unusual activity related to personal information. We are working with PowerSchool to ensure that all affected individuals have the resources they need to safeguard their information.

Looking Ahead: “We understand how concerning this situation is for our families and staff,” said Charles Bradley, Superintendent of Mustang Public Schools. “While this incident occurred outside of our systems, we are taking every step to ensure our community is informed and supported as we navigate this challenge together.”

For further updates, please visit https://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/ or contact PowerSchool directly at 877-873-1550 or Security@PowerSchool.com.

#MPSLearningInAction: Decoding with Jenga (Riverwood)!

Decoding with Jenga: Fun Literacy Skills at Play!

Are you looking for a playful way to help young readers practice decoding skills? Look no further than Jenga! This classic block-stacking game, typically enjoyed as a test of dexterity and balance, can easily be transformed into an educational tool that supports literacy growth in a fun, hands-on way. Here’s how you can bring “Decoding Jenga” to life at home or in the classroom!

MrsGray

What is Decoding?

Decoding is the process by which young readers sound out words by using knowledge of letter-sound relationships. It’s a fundamental skill that helps children become fluent, confident readers. By practicing decoding, children learn to recognize sounds, blend them together, and eventually read words with ease.

Why Use Jenga for Decoding Practice?

  1. Hands-On Learning: Jenga makes decoding interactive. Kids can literally “build” their reading skills as they play.
  2. Engaging & Fun: It’s a great way to mix learning with play, keeping kids motivated and excited.
  3. Adaptable for Different Levels: Jenga can be used for early learners working on basic letter sounds or older readers focusing on more challenging words.
Jenga1

Setting Up Decoding Jenga

Here’s what you need:

  • Jenga Blocks (or a similar block-stacking game)
  • Markers (for writing letters, sounds, or words on the blocks)

1. Preparing the Blocks

  • Write a single letter, word, or sound pattern on each block. For beginners, stick to single letters and simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like cat or hat. For more advanced readers, you can add digraphs (like ch, sh, or th) or even short sight words (the, and, see).

2. Building the Game

  • Set up the Jenga tower as usual, mixing up the blocks so different letters or words appear in random order. Now, each time a child pulls a block, they’ll be faced with a decoding challenge!
Jenga4

How to Play Decoding Jenga

  1. Choose a Block and Decode: Have each player choose a block to pull, then read the letter, sound, or word on it aloud. They’ll need to decode correctly to keep the block!
  2. Blend and Build: For an extra challenge, ask the player to blend sounds together. If they pull a block with the letter c and the next block has at, they can combine them to make cat.
  3. Keep Track of Words: As words are decoded, keep a list on a separate sheet of paper to reinforce memory and spelling. You might even try to make silly sentences out of them as you go!
Jenga3

Variations for Different Skill Levels

  • Letter Sounds for Beginners: Start by writing basic letters and ask players to say the sound each one makes.
  • Sight Words for Emerging Readers: Use simple words that kids will frequently encounter, helping them build familiarity.
  • Sentence Building for Advanced Readers: Write words on the blocks, and challenge players to form sentences using the blocks they’ve drawn.
Jenga2

Learning Through Play

Decoding Jenga isn’t just a fun game; it’s also an effective way to strengthen foundational reading skills! By incorporating play-based learning, children can practice decoding in a relaxed, engaging environment. Give it a try and watch as your little learners build confidence, one block at a time.
