In the Functional Skills classroom, we will be working on a variety of different Cognitive Skills that include ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies. These different skills will be based on each student's IEP goals and their individual needs. These goals are determined by the district's Functional Skills Assessment and Curriculum. In the Functional Skills classroom, the main ways in which we practice the core subjects and work on IEP goals are through programs called News2You, Unique Learning System, and Boardmaker Online. These are interactive, online, academic programs that teach subjects like ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies in a way that accommodates our students' learning styles. On top of Cognitive Skills, we also work on Job Training Skills, and Self Help Skills. Not only will we practice academic skills, but we will also practice cooking, a variety of different chores, hygiene skills, and social skills, among several others. Students in the Functional Skills classroom will spend most of their time in my classroom, but will also be exposed to inclusion time with their peers during their Life App class. Life Apps include Music, Band, Art, Technology, Spanish, Communications, PE, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
Feel free to email me if you have any questions about the curriculum, Life Apps, or any other aspect of the Functional Skills class.
