Information & News

Mustang Families,

We have received EXCITING news! The USDA recently announced the decision to extend federal waivers allowing our school district to provide FREE meals for all Mustang students through December, or until funds are exhausted.

Who can receive these meals?

Any child age 18 and under can receive free breakfast and lunch from Mustang Public Schools. The child does not have to be enrolled in the district, but must be a sibling of a student who is enrolled in MPS, and provide that student’s ID number.  When are the meals available?

Click Here for Update for ALL meals:  Students attending Mustang Schools in person will receive their breakfast and lunch at school. Any virtual student enrolled at MPS can complete the online order form each day to receive the free meals to be picked up on the following day at Mustang High School. Order forms are due by 11:00pm for meal service on the following day.

Are meals available for weekends and holidays?

No, school-provided meals are only available on/for days we would normally be in the school building.

Are all items available through the cafeteria free?

No, à la carte items in the cafeteria are only available through purchase. Funds can be added to accounts via check or cash brought to the school cafeteria; funds can also be added online (preferred method).

What happens to the money currently on my child's account?

This federal waiver will expire June 30, 2021. Current balances will remain in your child's account until that time. In the interim, funds in your child's meal account can be used to purchase a la carte items if they have been set up to allow this.  If you DO NOT want your child purchasing any à la carte items/Smart Snacks (approved by USDA) through the lunch line, please e-mail Kim at novotnyk@mustangps.org so we can flag their account.  Additionally, we will be returning funds used to purchase any meals from August 24 through September 21 to the students account for future use; this will take some time to process.

Is there any reason I need to complete a free and reduced lunch application?

Yes! Participation in the free and reduced meal program directly benefits our school district and can generate additional money and resources for students at Mustang Public Schools. Parents must reapply each year.  If you have not completed a 2020-21 free/reduced application, please do so today!  Did you know? The federal Free & Reduced School Meal application impacts MUCH MORE than students eating low cost or free meals in our cafeterias. Our enrollment percentage in this program can generate additional money and resources for students at MPS!

4 REASONS to complete a Free & Reduced School Meal application

  1. Your student could receive nutritious meals for NO COST or at a significantly reduced cost.

  2. The amount of money we receive from the federal government in our title programs is based on the percentage of students enrolled in the Free & Reduced program at MPS.

  3. Our ability to apply for both state and federal grants that benefit many of the students at Mustang Public Schools is directly tied to our Free & Reduced program enrollment numbers.

  4. Enrollment in this program could make your home internet service more affordable.

Student information related to the Free and Reduced School Meal program is HIGHLY confidential. All students eating school meals receive the same service and same meal.  No one around the child would have any idea if they were a full pay or free student.

Offer Versus Serve

Mustang Public Schools will be providing more options for elementary and intermediate students. "Offer versus Serve" is a program approved by the USDA that allows students to refuse as many as two items of the five items that make up a school lunch (or one of four items at breakfast) as long as what they do select includes a half-cup of fruit, half-cup of vegetables or a fruit juice. As room allows, Mustang's school cafeterias will be offering a variety of fruits and vegetables for students to select from.

With the Offer Versus Serve program, students are no longer required to take milk or a milk substitute. Students can select a juice and two to four other items to make up their reimbursable meal. Allowing students to have more control of what is on their plate will be a bonus not only for the students, but should also lead to less food being wasted.

In addition to students being able to refuse one item at breakfast or two items at lunch, more entree options will be offered for both meals. For breakfast at Mustang's elementary schools and intermediate centers there will be two entrée choices every morning for breakfast: the main entrée OR cereal and toast. For lunch, there will be three entrée choices every day for lunch.
