A
note to students and parents about English-Spanish websites:
Some students believe that the web can do their homework! Contrary to popular belief, the internet is not always a perfect resource. It can be a help when looking up individual words or common phrases. However, unless you contract a professional translator via the web (which can cost big bucks!), don’t expect the net to do your translating assignments for you.
Here’s why: Let’s say I have an assignment to
translate the following sentence from English to Spanish: “I can go to
the mall with you on Saturday.” If
I were to use my textbook, classroom notes and other teacher-provided
resources, I would likely find that this assignment is utilizing the very
vocabulary we have been studying in class (imagine that!). I would translate it as follows: “Puedo (I am able) ir (to
go) al (to the) centro comercial (mall) contigo (with you)
el sábado (on Saturday).
However, if I looked up each individual
word on a translation website, my sentence would look more like this: Yo
(I) lata (can, like a coke can) ir (to go) a la (to the) alameda
(different word for shopping center, not part of our vocabulary) con
(with) usted (formal way to say you, again, not what we’re
studying) el sábado (on Saturday).
Obviously, if the purpose of my assignment
was to practice using the vocabulary we’re currently studying, I would
not be doing so here! The internet, and translation sites are helpful
resources, SOMETIMES, but use them carefully, and DON’T rely on them to
do your assignments for you.

Hoping that computers were doing a better job of translating than they used to,
we put some Internet translators to the test again in a repeat of an experiment
we did three years earlier. The results weren't any better the second time
around.
