COURSE SYLLABUS FOR MNMS SPANISH CLASSES
2008-2009
All grades and
classes will receive instruction leading to novice level competence in basic
speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills using a variety of media and
techniques. All students will practice
pronunciation and listening comprehension skills on a daily basis. Culture and geography skills and topics will
be incorporated at all levels. Specific
instructional methods and materials will vary by class, but all classes will
cover the themes and topics listed below by grade. Grammar concepts such as verbs forms,
singular and plural forms of nouns and adjectives, pronouns, word order,
masculine and feminine forms, definite and indefinite articles, number and
gender agreement etc. will be incorporated at all levels but instructional
focus will be on basic communication skills and vocabulary building, not
grammar.

EIGHTH GRADE
Students will communicate
about daily activities and personal interests by having simple conversations
and writing notes about their school day, hobbies, and interests. Students will compare and contrast their
activities and interests with their classmates and with typical students in
other cultures and countries.
Students will read
and understand communication on familiar topics such as class schedules and
classroom procedures, family, menus, clothing, parts of the body, sports, and
shopping.
Students will
listen to the teacher and to each other describe personal interests and
activities and respond appropriately to simple questions.
Students will read
and understand simple stories and answer comprehension questions using
vocabulary presented in class.
SEMESTER LENGHTH CLASSES
WILL COVER THE SAME MATERIAL IN MORE DEPTH.
STUDENTS WILL ALSO COMPLETE TWO PROJECTS.

SEVENTH GRADE
Students will
communicate orally and in writing about what they like and don’t like and about
what they have, want, and need by having simple conversations and writing notes
about their school day using simple classroom expressions, command and
requests, and by talking about school supplies, classes, and classroom objects.
Students will talk
about what they have, want, and need for school and include vocabulary
indicating colors, numbers, sizes, and prices as needed.
Students will
listen to the teacher and to each other describe the classroom and school
supplies and respond appropriately to simple questions.
Students will
describe their bedrooms and compare/contrast them with their classmates.
A basic review of colors, numbers, calendario terms, and greetings/ courtesies will be
included as needed, but most sixth grade topics will not be repeated.

SIXTH GRADE
Students will learn
the Spanish alphabet and pronunciation.
Students will
communicate with each other using basic greetings and courtesies.
Students will learn
colors, shapes, numbers 0-31, and do simple math.
Students will learn

calendario terms for days of the week, months, and
seasons, and talk about dates, holidays, and birthdays.
Students will give
and ask for personal information such as: name, address, telephone number, age,
birthday, favorite color, best friend, and likes and dislikes.
Students will learn
basic weather vocabulary and describe typical weather for each season.
Time permitting,
students will learn animal/pet vocabulary and act out a simple story using
animal characters.
