Academic Team

The tradition of sending JROTC Academic and Leadership teams to Washington D.C. continues. Once again the Mustang High JROTC has advanced through two rounds of competition to earn the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. for the 2010 Junior ROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl, (JLAB). Both the Academic and Leadership teams will travel to Washington D.C. and compete in the competition from June 25 through June 29. The competition will be held on the campus of George Mason University in Washington D.C. The Mustang High School JROTC program is the only JROTC program of the 1,645 JROTC programs in the world to send teams in both an Academic team and Leadership team two years in a row. The Mustang High School JROTC program is also the only Oklahoma JROTC program to send teams to the JLAB competition in Washington D.C. Each team includes four members and two alternates. The first rounds of competition were an online format. Teams were placed in a room, and were required to answer questions from a variety of subjects. The Academic team was quizzed over ACT/SAT format questions and current events. The Leadership team was quizzed over the JROTC curriculum and the life and works of General George C. Marshall. Major Stephen Muehlberg, senior Army instructor for the MHS JROTC, said the teams were coached by two former members who made the trip to Washington D.C. last year. Seniors Joshua Thaler and Nathan Miller prepared numerous practice tests to prepare both teams for the competition. "Their experience from last year's competition was incredibly helpful in preping this year's teams," Muehlberg said. The Bronce Academic Team beat 1110 other teams and is one of 24 teams that will compete in Washington. The Mustang JROTC Academic Team is one of three to make it from 5th Brigade, which includes all programs in Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. There are over 330 JROTC programs in 5th Brigade. The Leadership Team beat out 967 other schools to be one of 48 teams to make it to Washington D.C. Once again, the Mustang JROTC Leadership team was one of five JROTC leadership teams to make it from 5th Brigade, which is made up of over 330 JROTC programs.
