Meet the Teacher

Dear Parents,

Our Room
This year we have 19 students, 11 boys and 8 girls.
We enjoy going to the computer lab every Monday and we have
4 computers in our room that we often use.

This class really likes singing and moving so we are learning many
skills using music. Thanks to Jenny Dowd and her "Phonics Dance"
book and activities we are moving and grooving to our alphabet and
hunks and chunks. (ex: sh,oo,ou,er,ing)

Our Math curriculum is a mixture of Math Their Way, Singapore Math,
Houghtin Mifflin and my vast collection of age appropriate math
activities.

We are involved with several activities this year:

Tatankah, Travel Buddy
Big - Little Buddies
Elmer's Glue Recycling Program

Our year has started off with a fantastic start.
We are reading, writing, and building our stamina
to become independent workers.

 My Philosophy
The Centennial First grade
program provides a meaningful
learning environment
that incorporates the social, emotional,
physical and
cognitive well-being of the whole child
by laying the foundation to help
each child become a
self motivated, self sustained,
life-long learner.

Odyssey of the Mind
One of my interests as a teacher/parent is coaching young people in
Odyssey of the Mind competitions.
In 2000-01, (5th grade) the team won
first in state and went on to WORLD competition in Maryland.

In 2001-02 , ( 6th and 9th graders) we were 2nd in Region and 6th in State.
In 2003 - 04, (8th and 9th graders) a great team
from North Middle school came in 1st place in Regional and 2nd in State.
They also went to WORLD competition in Maryland and did
better than 2001.

2006-07 , found the core team as Juniors at Mustang High.
They  again came in 1st in Regional  and in State. They went to
the WORLD Finals in East Lansing Michigan in May!!!!!!!
It was an awesome trip and they meet a team from Germany
and they  placed in the top half of WORLD.

The core team was: Patricia Baker, Rachel Byrd, Sonia Miller,
Kristen Mortimer, and Wesley Matthew.
The newest additions were Greg and Stephen Schwartz.

I would like to thank the administration and Board of
Education for supporting
the team.
We are also supported by the
High School in which the team attends and by
parental financial backing. I would like to thank them for
their support of this wonderful educational experience
for students. If you wish to find out more
