General Class Information

GENERAL INFORMATION

Holt’s Elements of Literature is the major text for this course.  Its scope is broad, covering a variety of great American literary periods. Grammar and composition will be taught using class presentations, discussions, oral exercises, individual study, worksheets, and the use of Writing and Grammar, published by Prentice Hall.  English III objectives are to help you appreciate American literature as a study of life, to broaden your oral skills through class discussions and special reports, and to develop basic skills necessary for effective written communication.

ASSIGNMENTS

  1. Literature
  2. Grammar and Composition
  3. Research Assignments
  4. Daily assignments
  5. Reports, both written and oral
  6. Vocabulary assignments and quizzes

GRADES

The course grade will be based on an accumulation of points from exams, daily work, various projects and reports that will vary in value.

            A=100-90

            B=89-80

            C=79-70

            D=69-60

            F=59 and below

All daily assignments are worth 60 % of the semester grade, and all exams and major writing assignments are worth the remaining 40%.  Bonus will only be offered once a semester.  It is given at the end of the semester.

LATE WORK

Students are advised to turn in their work on the date it is due.  Each student will have only one opportunity per nine weeks to turn in a daily assignment one day late. If the student turns in this assignment one day late, he or she will only have the possibility of receiving a 70% for that assignment.  If the assignment is not received after the second day, the student will receive a zero.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES

  1. Students should refer to the absence policy in the student handbook.
  2. It is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher what assignments need to be made up.

BEHAVIOR

It is expected that every student allow me to teach, allow his or her classmates to learn, and every student is expected to take responsibility for his or her own self.
