Mrs. Hanes’

Speech & Language Class

Welcome to my webpage!

Students work on one or more of the following communication skills in my class:

Articulation, Language, Pragmatics, Fluency and Voice.

General Class Information

Class Rules: SPEECH (each letter represents a rule)

S = Silent Feet (walk quietly to and from class)

P = Practice Kindness (use kind words and perform acts of kindness)

E = Ears On (listen)

E = Everyone Try Your Best (work hard and don’t give up)

C = Cheer Others On (we’re a team and we encourage others)

H = Have fun!

Students following these rules during class are rewarded with a sticker for their chart.  When 5 stickers are earned, the student has the choice of picking a prize out of the treasure chest.

*If homework is sent home, the student has an opportunity to bring it back for an extra sticker! (Parents are welcome to call me and request homework practice.)

Home Practice

Articulation

Have fun finding items around the home that have your child’s target sound in them. Have your child listen as you say the word with emphasis on the target sound. (Example: For sofa, say “SSSofa”) This practice can be effective without frustrating your child.

Language

Put picture and/or word labels on items around the house targeting one category at a time (ex: colors, shapes, clothing, food groups like dairy & fruits).  Then talk about how they’re the same and different.

Pragmatics

Staying on Topic: Role Play how to begin and maintain a conversation. First, Greet the person. Second, ask a question about what he or she is doing.  Then, ask follow-up questions about the activity, using WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY and HOW.

Fluency

Stutters can occur when the child is excited, nervous, or feeling rushed.  A good rule of thumb is to give them your undivided attention, be patient, wait for their response and pretend as though you didn’t hear any bumpy speech. Sometimes drawing attention to the stutter can make it worse.

Voice

For harsh sounding voices, have the child practice approaching the person they want to speak to rather than yelling across the room.
