The English Language Learner program helps
students who speak a 2nd language in their home. We concentrate on listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills. Your child
will be taught English vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, and
comprehension. The goal of the program
is for students to become fully proficient in the English Language. We hope it will help them with their
regular class work. |
There are many ways you can help your ELL student at
home.
Listening/Speaking – Ask your child to repeat words, phrases, etc. back
to you. Tell your student a story and
ask them to tell the story back to you.
Discuss the day’s events with your child.
Reading/Writing – Games (including computer games) which use pictures
and words. Educational television
programs, i.e. Channel 13 and the Discovery Channel. Give them opportunities to write lists such
as grocery lists, packing lists, etc. Ask them to write down what they are
telling you. Check out books on tape at the library and listen to them.
Comprehension – Reading in your home language or English to your child
and your child reading to you, then talking about what was read. Visits to parks, museums, circuses, fairs, etc.
