OPTION 1:  Create and build a model of an earthquake resistant building. Your model should be able to fit in a large shoebox.  There is an example shown on pg. 107, Figure 9.2 in your C.E. book.   Write a 1 page (front side)  typed report explaining why you chose your design and materials.

OPTION 2:   Make a newspaper that includes articles addressing the following topics:  A main story that is a description of a major earthquake  (Who, What, When, Where, and Why),  1 story about the economic impacts on the area that are caused by the earthquake, 1 story about the social impacts on the area, and a human interest story involving the earthquake.  You need to include at least one  picture in your newspaper.  Your newspaper needs to be designed like a newspaper with a title, byline, date, etc.

OPTION 3:   Design and build a museum exhibit to display information about your catastrophic event. Use a tri-fold display board (can be purchased at Wal Mart, Staples, Mardels, etc.) for this option.  Include pictures (these may be obtained off the internet, books, or magazines, but be sure to give credit), write articles about people, testimonials from eyewitnesses, data and statistical information about the earthquake, and any other important materials relative to the earthquake. Note:  Be sure that you are the author of the articles.  Don't just print or copy articles written by other people.

Option #4 - Build a caldera!  Click here and follow the directions on this page for building a caldera. You need Adobe Reader to read this file.  You can go to www.adobe.com to download a free copy.   Take a picture of your caldera and answer the conclusion questions at the bottom of the page for your report.

OPTION 5:    You will use the resource websites to look up pictures of each of the following clouds:cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and nimbus.You will make EITHER a PowerPoint presentation using 3 examples of each of the above types OR you may paste the pictures into a word document and make a scrapbook of your clouds.  Be sure that you identify each cloud by its type and write a descriptive paragraph about each of your examples.  Tell where what level of the atmosphere you would find these clouds, a general description of that cloud type and what type of weather is associated with is. It would be preferable to use a digital camera to take pictures of the clouds yourself.  IF you are unable to take your own pictures, use these websites to find pictures and research information for your poster and scrapbook.

OPTION 6:  Build your own weather station consisting of a barometer, raingauge, hygrometer and weather vane.  Click here to go to the Franklin Institute's website see the directions on how to construct your own homemade weather station.  You will need to use the weather journal on the Franklin's forecast website to record the weather for a 5-day period.
