CLOUDS GALORE

Introduction

You have been assigned to be the curator of the Clouds Art Galleryto be opened in six months. Your job description tells you to provide a collection of art that displays the different kinds of clouds. You accept the job and begin photographing, collecting, identifying, and displaying as many types of clouds as you can.

The Task

For this assignment you will research various websites that show weather reports with the amount of cloud cover. You will incorporate the information from these sites to make and record daily observations of the cloud cover and types.You will complete a data table covering a five-day period of time.You will also use these websites and your textbook to gather information and do a worksheet about cloud types. A cloud chart using cotton balls and poster board to model and identify four of those types will be made. Lastly, you will take pictures of actual clouds using a digital camera or collect pictures of clouds from various websites and display that collection in a scrapbook of clouds or a PowerPoint presentation.

The Process

    1.  Each of you will be working by yourself for this project.
2. Each of you will research the different cloud types and complete the “Cloud Classification” worksheet.
3. Each day for a 5-day period, you will look outside.Identify and record the types of clouds you see.Predict the type of weather we will have today based on the clouds you observe.Compare your prediction to the actual forecast from one of the weather websites.Complete the data table with your observations.
4.Each of you will make the cloud chart. using manila tagboard or poster board.  Follow the directions listed on the link.
5.You will use the resource websites to look up pictures of each of the following clouds:cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and nimbus.You will make EITHER a PowerPoint presentation using 3 examples of each of the above types OR you may paste the pictures into a word document and make a scrapbook of your clouds.Be sure that you identify and label each of your examples with their name.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLOUD CHART

MATERIALS:12 X 18 SHEET OF MANILLA TAGBOARD; COTTON BALLS; MARKERS

PROCEDURE:

1.Fold the tag board into quarters and draw lines where the fold marks are.

2.Make ½ inch marks up the left side of each of the four quarters. Each mark

will represent 5,000 feet.

3.Label the marks from 5,000 feet to 55,000 feet.

3.In each upper right corner of each quarter, put the name of the following clouds:cirrus

Cumulus, stratus, and nimbostratus.

5.Write a description of the typical weather associated with each kind of cloud. 

Put your description in the upper right corner of the box where you wrote the 

name.

6.Use the pictures found on the websites to shape the cotton balls correctly for

each kind of cloud.You can color the cotton with a black felt-tipped marker to

give the nimbostratus a gray color.Use markers to draw sunshine for fair

weather days.

7.Glue the clouds in place at their proper altitude. Use the following links to find the correct altitudes.
