Explanatory Writing; Sensory Details; 8 Parts of Speech; Pacific Island Research

Day 1 - Show an episode of Gilligan's Island; students do Gilligan's TV Parts of Speech Worksheet       Click here to view
Day 2 - Students choose a character and research independently in computer lab                                  Click here to view
            Students begin Webquest and take notes on Gilligan Webquest Worksheet
            As finish, students explore Gilligan's Island Fan Club Site
Day 3 - Students break into groups, continue Webquest Worksheet, using the internet and encyclopedias for additional facts
            Groups brainstorm ideas to solve their problem on the island
Day 4 - Students work in the classroom:       begin visual project - poster or powerpoint
                                                                    begin paragraph
Day 5 - Students continue working in the classroom to finish posters, powerpoints, and paragraphs
 
 
 
  • Students work in cooperative groups to research and solve one of the needs of the castaways on Gilligan's Island: shelter, food, rescue, and money 
  • Students will research ocean storms; islands' resources and weather; explore food preparation, map-making, currencies, and various shelters; and utilize the Internet, encyclopedias, library books, and interviews. 
END PRODUCT~
Students' will make posters or PowerPoint presentations and show models to explain their ideas for FOOD, SHELTER, A PLAN FOR ESCAPE, and A NEW CURRENCY to fellow survivors (or classmates.) 

Student Presentations will include the following:
 
I.  WRITTEN PORTION:   II.  A VISUAL COMPONENT
       Descriptive Explanatory Paragraph: 
         Include title, topic and closing sent.

                 Appeal to 3 of 5 senses.

                 Use time order words & phrases.
Use your imagination:
           Make drawings, foods, menus,
           posters, powerpoints, and/or models.
      Definition of 2 of the 8 parts of speech
        Identify them in your paragraph
        Be able to teach the class
        Part of Year End Review
 
                              

RESOURCES: (vary project as needed)
Internet and computer access, encyclopedias, posterboard, colored pencils or markers, and a variety of materials to make shelter models 

**This project could easily tie in with survival literature, such as Hatchet or Island of the Blue Dolphins.

INTRO - THE STORY!

 
    One warm, golden afternoon, YOU and six other people set sail aboard a small ship called the S.S. Minnow for a short, exotic ocean cruise.  Yet, something terrible happened while you were on board!  (Which character will you choose to be?)
 

    The Skipper and his first mate, Gilligan, were the only crew. Passengers included a beautiful girl (MaryAnn), a glamourous movie star (Ginger), a brilliant professor, and a married millionaire couple (Thurston & Lovey Howell, III.) The Skipper, Gilligan, and their passengers set sail for a relaxing tour of the Pacific Ocean. (Yes, it was a three hour tour...a three hour tour...)
 
     Suddenly, ... the weather started getting rough.  The tiny ship was lost.  If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost.  The Minnow would be lost...

    A huge tropical storm almost sank your tiny ship. The S.S. Minnow was thrown about in raging winds.  The ship and radio were badly damaged.  Yet, miraculously, you and the other survivors washed ashore on the sandy beach of an un-charted island.  It was a tropical paradise, but you despretly hoped to be rescued from this lonely island.
    It is your first day on the island, and you need shelter, food, and water. Everyone is dividing up the tasks that you need do.  You have a lot to learn and do if you are going to be a SURVIVOR on Gilligan's Grammar Island!

The Quest:  Roles & Jobs on the Island

    From the list below, choose a character whose job you will enjoy. You will work with a group of students whose character names are the same as yours or who have the same job.  You will research and solve a problem on the island, such as FOOD, WATER, SHELTER, etc.  In small groups, you will then create a poster, PowerPoint, or typed or nicely written PARAGRAPH explaining your plans to the other survivors on the island.  You will also need a MODEL, FOOD, MENU, OR ILLUSTRATION (which can be on your poster) to show during your presentation to your classmates.

 

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR...

        1.  a Visual:  poster, menu, food, model, or powerpoint
        2. an Explanatory paragraph: (topic sent., details, and conclusion)
        3. Written definition of two parts pf speech  -
           underline or highlight examples of your parts of speech
           in your presentation

First, read below...

1.  If you haven't already, click on "Jobs To Do" on the main task bar.
Decide the character you would like to be.
2.  Groups of approx. 2-4 students will work together to solve the same problem (or have the same job) on the island.
3.  You will research to learn more about the weather, foods, and resources on the island.
4.  Your group will write a paragraph on a poster or PowerPoint explaining your ideas to the rest of the survivors on your island.  There is certain information that you must include in your project.
5.  You must show a visual:  a model, bring food, or show an illustration also.

Conclusion

    This project motivates and inspires students.  They work cooperatively to research using print and internet sources, take notes, and utilize higher thinking skills to create a plan to solve a problem for the castaways.  Students write explanatory paragraphs, define grammatical terms, identify parts of speech in writing, use sensory details, and communicate to their peers using technology, writing, and oral presentation.
