The Skipper
and his first mate, Gilligan, were the only
crew. Passengers included a beautiful girl (MaryAnn),
a glamourous movie star (Ginger), a brilliant professor, and a married
millionaire couple (Thurston & Lovey Howell, III.)
The Skipper,
Gilligan, and their passengers set sail for a relaxing tour of the Pacific
Ocean. (Yes, it was a three hour tour...a three hour tour...)
Suddenly, ... the weather started getting rough. The tiny ship was
lost. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would
be lost. The Minnow would be lost...

A huge
tropical storm almost sank your tiny ship. The S.S. Minnow was thrown about
in raging winds. The ship and radio were badly damaged. Yet,
miraculously, you and the other survivors washed ashore on the sandy beach
of an un-charted island. It was a tropical paradise, but you despretly
hoped to be rescued from this lonely island.
It is
your first day on the island, and you need shelter, food, and water. Everyone
is dividing up the tasks that you need do. You
have a lot to learn and do if you are going to be a SURVIVOR on Gilligan's
Grammar Island!

This project motivates and inspires students. They work cooperatively to research using print and internet sources, take notes, and utilize higher thinking skills to create a plan to solve a problem for the castaways. Students write explanatory paragraphs, define grammatical terms, identify parts of speech in writing, use sensory details, and communicate to their peers using technology, writing, and oral presentation.
