Mustang High School’s Spanish III classes are learning the language and about the culture in Costa Rica with a letter writing project. During the first nine weeks, students in Rose Chavez’s class wrote a letter in Spanish to a group of fourth and fifth graders in Costa Rica. Chavez met the would-be pen pals while leading a tour of Costa Rica over the summer.
“The assignment was to talk about themselves in Spanish, who they were, what they did and anything else they wanted to share with their future pen pal,” Chavez said. “The Spanish III students received their first response before Christmas.”
In student Colin Dunham’s original letter, he told his new pen pal about himself, including different types of foods he likes to eat. His pen pal replied that her family was poor and she didn’t know about the kinds of foods he wrote about, but that she was happy to have food. The class decided to send their pen pals a gift, such a coloring book or toy.
“I anticipated one box full of goodies to our new friends but instead they filled up three boxes full of goodies with their response to their letters.”
All of Chavez’s students are selling calendars the students in Costa Rica created as a fundraiser for the Central American school. The bilingual calendars are available for $11. Contact Chavez at chavezr@mustangps.org to purchase a calendar. |
