Two MPS Students Win Oklahoma Writing Project Honors

Two students who attend Mustang Horizon Intermediate School were recently recognized for their exemplary writing by the Oklahoma Writing Project. During the Fall 2018 semester, Mrs. Kristin Whitmore, English teacher at Horizon, solicited works for 2019 OWP Write To Win Contest, and entered 10 student submissions into the annual contest.  On February 29, 2019 she was informed that two of her students, Alexis Kierstead and Brooklyn Davis were selected as winners for their personal narrative and short story, respectively.

The two students and their teacher were invited to attend the award ceremony at the Oklahoma City Zoo in March, and were able to participate in the OWP’s Amazing Race where students participated in four different writing stations and learned lessons from a variety of writing genres.  At the conclusion of the Race, Alexis and Brooklyn were honored, and it was then announced that Alexis won the highest award of Directors Choice for Elementary Writing for her essay about the passing of her beloved family dog. “I’m so proud of these two girls and all of the students who submitted writing, their writings were all exceptional and I am proud of their work and initiative,” said Whitmore. “In fact, they were recognized at the school and each worked with me to teach their peers a lesson that they had learned from their experience at the OWP Amazing Race.”

The Oklahoma Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, has existed on the University of Oklahoma campus since 1978. Along with its counterpart on the Oklahoma State University campus, the Oklahoma Writing Project serves as a professional learning community that identifies, celebrates, and enhances the professional role of successful Oklahoma classroom teachers. OWP is sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents of Higher Education, the University of Oklahoma, and the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education.
