Bronco Bus Begins Summer Tour To Combat "Summer Slide"

(Mustang, Oklahoma – June 4, 2019) – When most people think of “summer” and “slide,” there is a vision of waterparks, suntan lotion, and an overwhelming feeling of fun.  However, when educators think of those two terms together, a different vision, one of student learning loss is conjured. Mustang Public Schools is rolling out an inventive new program to help prevent the summer slide of learning; it is called the Mustang Bronco Bus.

The brainchild of Mustang Public Schools’ English Language Arts Curriculum Coordinators, Misty Eidson and Lise Geniesse, the Bronco Bus is a mobile literacy station that will travel the District/City throughout June and July offering free books, fun games, guest readers, and STEM activities to engage children of all ages.  “For a project with zero budget, this would not be possible without the generous support of the Mustang community. From book donations, to high school Advanced Placement Art students volunteering to pain the bus, to MPS Operations building shelves, to Kona Ice serving shaved ice, this is a Mustang Community Bus,” MPS Director of Communications, Kirk Wilson stated.

“The bus (which premiered today) was a huge hit,” said Geniesse.  In the first stop at Centennial Elementary School, the bus served over 30 students and featured guest readers, Geromy Schrick, MPS Technology Director and Christy Walters, Central Middle School Teacher.  Schrick was also featured later in the morning at Horizon Intermediate along with Deputy Superintendent Tracy Skinner where the Bronco Bus served another group of over 30 students. “We checked out books to over 60 students, and several just came to enjoy the games and activities,” Geniesse added.

“We are so proud of our community for helping make this project a reality.  The research shows that if students have access to 12-15 books over the summer, the loss of learning over the two month break can be minimized or even overcome.  This is our way to help get books into the hands of kids,” said Eidson.
