At the heart of Mustang is the Mustang Public School District. Covering 69 square miles in Canadian and Oklahoma counties, the district is home to more than 8,200 students. With the opening of Mustang Centennial Elementary in August 2007, the district boasts six elementary schools, two middle schools, a ninth-grade center, Mustang High School and Mustang Education Center, the district's home for pre-kindergarten, alternative education (PASS) and gifted and talented education (GATE). Although the district is growing by more than 200 students each year, it retains the small-town feel residents appreciate while offering all the opportunities available at large districts.
Transitions Model of School Improvement …
One reason why Mustang Public Schools is growing by more than 200 students a year is the district’s position as a leader in education in Oklahoma. While achievement across grade levels is important, the administration and teachers at Mustang Public Schools have instituted a system of continuous improvement. The Transitions Model of School Improvement, endorsed by North Central Accreditation, evaluates success on a child-by-child level. The system is designed so that every child is as successful as she can be and that none fall through the cracks. Students are “credentialled” in areas like reading and math to ensure they are proficient and ready for the next step. Remediation is available to help struggling students reach the next level.
