Advanced Placement courses are rigorous and require additional time and energy outside the classroom. After the course is completed, students can sign up to take an exam over the material for $86. Financial aid is available to families who meet the requirements.  Deposit fees are required early in the second semester with the balance due after spring break so students and parents can budget for the expense. The date for the test is set with the College Board; Mustang Public Schools has no control over testing dates.

Scoring for the tests ranges from 1 (low) to 5 (high). Usually, a college will grant college credit with a score of 3, but individual requirements may vary. Stop by http://www.okhighered.org/student-center/jrhigh-highscl/earncredit.shtml#ap for a list Oklahoma college links.

Every test passed means savings to the student and his or her family. For example, when comparing the $86 test fee to an estimated $208 per credit hour to take the course at a university, students can save a significant amount of money and time by taking the courses at MHS. In 2006-2007, 192 students took 335 exams. Of the tests taken, 168 received scores that would qualify them for college credit. The successful tests were worth more than $140,000 in tuition savings overall, or could be worth more than $700 in tuition savings per test.

Advantages of AP classes and testing include:
• Better preparation for college
• Preferential entry to selective colleges and possible advanced standing
• Reduced college expenses
• The students may earn a designation of AP Scholar at graduation, with three successful tests on full-year courses.
• Grade weighting for all Pre-AP and AP courses

Mustang offers the following AP classes: AP American History, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP English III, AP English IV, AP Environmental Science, AP European History, AP Human Geography, AP Physics and AP Statistics.

Although Mustang offers 12 AP courses, there are 19 tests available through the College Board. Taking a course is not a prerequisiste for taking a test.
