No School Tomorrow, Monday, May 20, 2019

MPS Families,

District personnel have been in close contact with the National Weather Service, and after careful consideration, have decided to cancel school for Monday, May 20, 2019; this will include all afterschool and evening activities (including Bronco Club).  Weather models have been consistent in predicting significant severe weather for tomorrow, so this decision is being made in an abundance of caution. We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your understanding as safety is our utmost concern.  Site principals will be in touch regarding any rescheduling of activities, assemblies, etc.  We will keep you updated as needed through email, phone calls, text messages, social media and right here at

About Principal, Alisha Suffield

It is with great pride and excitement that I introduce myself, Alisha Suffield, as the new principal of Riverwood Elementary. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to serve the Mustang Community as the leader of Mustang’s newest elementary site.

My husband Robert of 19 years, and my two children, Jackson and Addison, also call Mustang home. If I am not at school working, you will find me along a sideline or sitting in the stands cheering for my own two Broncos.

My passion for public education and supporting the success of students has been shaped over the past 20 years through my experiences as an early childhood teacher, elementary teacher,  assistant principal, and principal. My combined professional experiences in education includes many years working with students in a variety of teaching opportunities within grades K-5. My focus and passion is early childhood and elementary education practices. I am elated to have the opportunity to use my experiences from the classroom and my leadership skills to partner with you in education to ensure your child’s growth and success this year.

Alongside the Riverwood staff, I will work hard to continue the tradition of success and excellence in providing high quality education that has been established by all of our schools and expected by  Mustang families. One of my personal goals this year is to build strong relationships with students, parents, staff and our community partners as we plan for the future.

A well rounded education means not only outstanding instruction from top-notch teachers but opportunities to participate in activities that allow students to build character, explore passions and try new things. At Riverwood and in Mustang, we have strong emphasis on character development with monthly education initiatives, innovative learning opportunities through STEM and technology, while fostering a safe and nurturing environment for all students to thrive. We are committed to using current data to make informed decisions about student learning and employ a variety of research based strategies to increase student achievement.

I anticipate this will be an exciting and successful year of firsts for everyone! Please know that our teachers and staff look forward to  supporting the academic, social and emotional growth your child at Riverwood. As your principal please know my door is always open and I welcome your feedback and input. Please feel free to stop in to make an appointment to see me in person to chat, to call, or email me to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or compliments about great things happening in our school or for your child.

I look forward to our partnership!

Alisha Suffield

About Assistant Principal, Lauren Barnes

Dear Riverwood Families,

I am so thrilled to announce that I am the Assistant Principal of Riverwood.  I am so grateful for this experience. I can’t wait to be apart of this amazing team of opening the newest elementary in Mustang!

Not only am I excited to begin working with your children,  but I look forward to the work we will do together. As the old African proverb states, “ It takes a village to raise a child.”  I am excited to see your children through your eyes. I cannot wait to share with you the great things they do throughout their days here at Riverwood.  And of course, I will be here to work with you should they need any help navigating any aspect of the school day. My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can.

I began my career as a kindergarten teacher at Mustang Creek Elementary. The last 4 years I have served as the Assistant Principal of Mustang Trails. All of my experiences have been positive and have shaped my values and beliefs today. I am fortunate to have my own 3 children in the district that I was raised in. I strive to make the educational experience for all students at Riverwood like that of my own children.

Like I mentioned above, I was raised in Mustang. I attended Lakehoma Elementary, Mustang North Middle School, and graduated from Mustang High School. My college experience is a Bachelor of Science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a Masters in Administration from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. I am married to my best friend Gentry Barnes. He is a Medical Dosimetrist and works in Oncology. We have 3 beautiful children, Grayson, Traylon, and Braylee. They keep us pretty busy with sports but in our spare time we like to go to the lake and just hang out as a family.

I look forward to a great school year! I know it is going to be an exciting year for all of us! Please know you can contact me anytime at .

In partnership,

Lauren Barnes
