Welcome to 7th Grade ELA
Welcome to 7th grade ELA! You’ve heard the stories….are you ready for the experience?
We are going to be busy this year, and there are just a few things that you will need to remember. Every day you need to bring your agenda, pencil, and Independent Reading book to class.
The focus of our Language Arts class is on developing critical thinking skills which will involve forming ideas, as opposed to just locating answers within a text. This will require participation in both whole and small group discussion and a significant amount of writing. We will be reading several classroom novels as well as selections from the literature textbooks. We will also cover several elements of English. This will include a broadened knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and writing. Becoming comfortable writing for a variety of audiences and purposes will be a focus for this class. We will experience a variety of genres, including historical fiction, fantasy, mystery/adventure, nonfiction, realistic fiction, and biographies. Our goals this year are to increase your fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills, but most of all we hope you develop a lifelong love of reading, writing and learning!!!
Our grading system is structured by a whole points system and each quarter will have the following breakdown of points:
One-Pagers/Independent Reading 144 points 18%
Common Formative Assessment 288 points 35%
Essay 200 points 25%
Project 100 points 12%
812 points 100%
Student progress should be monitored with Parent Portal. Parents, when checking your student’s grades please use the following grade scale:
A=100-90; B=89-80; C=79-70; D=69-60; F=59-0; A=Absent; Missing=0 (Failure to turn in assignment)
Pre-AP courses will have the same assessment schedule but will be reading more rigorous texts and have higher expectations on essays and projects.
