Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-Kindergarten
The Pre-kindergarten/Kindergarten Round-up was held March 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mustang High School Commons. Parents who could not make it to the round-up are asked to bring a completed enrollment packet to the Summer Enrollment Center on the campus of MHS. The enrollment center is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through Aug. 6, 2015.

Download a pre-kindergarten enrollment packet here.

Children must be 4-years-old by Sept. 1, 2015 to qualify for pre-kindergarten. Five-year-old students who DID NOT attend Mustang Public School's pre-kindergarten program last year and who need to enroll for kindergarten may also bring their enrollment material to the round-up.

An enrollment checklist is on the packet, including which vaccinations a child must have.

Pre-kindergarten is offered as the district has space. Satellite pre-k classes were opened at Centennial Elementary, Creek Elementary and Prairie View Elementary to accomodate additional students last year. The location and number of satellite classes for 2015-2016 will depend on enrollment and space available.

Dr. Phil Tompkins
Phil Tompkins' books
When he was growing up, Phil Tompkins had no intention of earning a Ph.D. and becoming one of the founding fathers of organizational communication. In high school, he was a wrestler and a debater, grappling his way through well thought out arguments and on the mats. He was good enough to earn scholarships to the University of Northern Colorado and was certain his debating skills would serve him well with a law degree. From the University of Northern Colorado, he went to the University of Nebraska for a master's in speech. Tompkins' thesis was about Nebraska Senator George Norris's successful 1934 campaign to create the only unicameral, non-partisan legislature in the United States (Tompkins, personal communication, Sept. 30, 2016).

Before his diploma was in hand, he had an offer to teach debate at the University of Kansas. His office would be in the law school. Law school was his goal and the arrangement appeared to be perfect. (Tompkins, personal communication, Sept. 30, 2016). It wasn't long, though, before fate intervened and his plans had changed.

"Teaching absolutely swept me away," he said in a phone interview (Sept. 30, 2016). "It was wonderful. One of our debaters won a Rhodes Scholarship and the university turned out more Wilson fellows than any other. It was heaven to teach there."
