Special Kards by Special Kids opens doors to community
Kards A special needs classroom at Mustang Mid-High has launched a new project whose benefit is extending outside the classroom. Special Kards by Special Kids is providing a way to teach English, math, reading and writing with the creation of cards for any occasion.

Instructor Sheryl Hazelbaker heard about making cards at a workshop earlier this year. An Oklahoma City business donated the initial supplies, and the idea has grown into a store of all-occasion cards.

“We’ve developed a company to allow the kids to learn work skills,” Hazelbaker said. “We hope it will prepare them to be as independent as possible according to their disabilities.”

The students make the cards every Friday in an assembly-line fashion, which also helps improve their fine motor skills. The cards are bagged and sorted according to type. When an order form is turned in, the students learn to pull the order and get it ready for delivery.

In the month since the students have been making the cards, customers have purchased 61. Hazelbaker hopes to make the cards available to the community.

“We’ll take it as big as we can,” she said. “They see a card they’ve created, and I think it gives them real pride.”
