Advanced Placement

Many of Mustang’s seniors are able to leave high school and start college at a sophomore level. Besides concurrent enrollment, in which students can take classes for credit with several area colleges,  Mustang Public Schools also offers 16 Advanced Placement courses which could allow a student to potentially earn college credit.

Advanced Placement courses are rigorous and require additional work outside the classroom. After the course is completed, students can sign up to take an exam over the material for $95. Financial aid is available to families who meet the requirements. Test registration is done online in the spring, starting in January and through March 1. The date for AP exams are set by the college board; Mustang Public Schools does not set testing dates.

Scoring for the tests ranges from 1 (low) to 5 (high). Usually, a college will grant college credit with a score of 3, but individual requirements may vary. Visit this website: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies.

Advantages of AP classes and testing include:
• Better preparation for college
• Preferential entry to selective colleges and possible advanced standing
• Reduced college expenses
• The students may earn a designation of AP Scholar at graduation and be recognized at an AP reception by scoring 3 or higher on at least 3 AP exams
