Two qualify for National Speech and Debate Tournament

Mustang seniors Ty Fanning and Devon Hannaford have qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament put on by the National Forensic League. The pair qualified with a second place win at the West Oklahoma National Forensic League tournament at the University of Oklahoma in April. They will travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the national competition June 13-21.

Emily Farnham, MHS drama instructor, said Fanning and Hannaford are one of four teams from Oklahoma to qualify for the national competition. They will perform their Duo Interpretation piece, PETE, a spoof of Peter Pan. Fanning and Hannaford will play multiple characters, and according to the rules of Duo Interpretation, the pair will not look at each other, make physical contact and cannot use props during the performance.

“Out of any students I’ve had, these two deserve this opportunity,” Farnham said. “They are both so driven and dedicated, and their work ethics, talent and humility are unmatched. This is also the first time in a very long time that students from Mustang will be competing at Nationals. I am so proud of all they’ve done and will do.”
